Ancient Japanese Pottery: An Analysis of Jomon Artistry This paper examines pottery from the middle Jomon period of ancient Japan, roughly 2500 BC until 1000 BC. The paper provides a general overview of art and culture during this period in Japan, but focuses most of its analysis upon two specific pieces of middle Jomon pottery, a ceramic pot and an earthenware bowl. Together, these pieces demonstrate a society that had developed a high degree of artistry without the rigid aesthetic trappings often found in similarly developed societies.
